Help me take a stand against blood cancer
I am participating in World's Greatest Shave as part of Team Wilde to raise funds for The Leukaemia Foundation.
I have decided to also shave off my luxurious non-grey locks. Who knows what will happen? Will I look like an alien? Will it grow back? Will it grow back grey? But that is the point. Our family has been living with terrible uncertainty since Mark‘s diagnosis of acute lymphoblastic leukaemia in December 2023. Mark has had numerous treatments, has been in hospital it seems more than at home and has endured all kinds of physical and mental suffering. And yet he maintains hope that he will come through.
I’ve included a photo from this week of Mark having his T-cells collected to initiate CAR-T therapy. This incredible scientific breakthrough involves having Mark’s own T-cells genetically modified in the US, reinfused into his body with the aim of attacking the leukaemia cells. This is just one of the many therapies and medications that have been made available to us because of the amazing research that has been done into blood cancers, a lot of it right here in Sydney. The therapy that Mark is having only became available to people in his situation about six months ago. This is how it is with blood cancers, the situation is constantly changing but research must be well funded.
