I'm fundraising for the World's Greatest Shave
Right now, over 150,000 Australians are facing the devastating impact of blood cancer, and 17 lose their life every single day.
20 years ago, on the 3rd of June 2005, Mum (Liz) was diagnosed with acute myeloid leukemia. Thankfully this year also marks 20 years of having survived Leukemia, so I have decided to join my brother in fundraising for the Leukemia Foundation by doing the World’s Greatest Shave with Team Virtue
I was barely 3 years old at the time, so I don’t have many memories of what was going on at the time, but one thing I strongly remember is seeing mum after she had lost all of her hair from treatment and being sad that I could no longer play with her hair to fall asleep. I’m not sure I was ever fully made aware of the seriousness of Mum’s illness at the time, as I don’t think a 3 year old can comprehend much of what was going on, most of what I know about that time is from being told many years later, like how on days when it was looking bad for Mum we were taken to dreamworld by relatives, which at the time I thought was just a fun trip, we were even allowed to drink coke, which was probably not the best for a 3 year old in retrospect.
As to not be one upped by my dear brother I have decided I’ll also be shaving my hard-earned long hair, which I have been growing out for the past 5 and a half years (notably much longer than Liam’s weak 2 and a half). How much of my hair gets chopped off depends on reaching donation goals. From $0-500 raised, I will be colouring my hair on the day, but for every $200 raised above the initial 500, one inch (25 mm) will be cut off, with a total of about 22 inches (580 mm), my total goal is $5000. If I do end up cutting it all off, it will then be donated.
If the $5000 goal is beaten, I’ll have my hair braided into a series of small braids so that anyone who has long been jealous of my luscious, flowing hair can take out their frustrations by cutting one personally, with the fee of a donation of course.
This decision has not been made lightly, as anyone who knows me is aware of just how much I like my hair being long, so let’s make it worthwhile by raising some money to repay the Leukemia Foundation for all the help they gave to the Virtue family throughout my mum’s treatment process 20 years ago..
Thanks for having your say
