Strasser and Huang Labs Take on the World’s Greatest Shave

The Strasser and Huang Labs at WEHI are swapping pipettes for clippers this March, joining the World’s Greatest Shave to raise vital funds for the Leukaemia Foundation and support people living with blood cancer.

As teams of cancer researchers, these labs know firsthand just how devastating cancer can be. Trained in cell biology, immunology, developmental biology, and molecular oncology, the team has spent decades uncovering how defects in programmed cell death (also known as apoptosis) contribute to diseases like cancer, autoimmune disorders, and resistance to cancer therapies.

“Our research aims to understand how cells die – and why sometimes they don’t when they should,” says Professor Andreas Strasser, lab head and long-time leader in cancer research. “When cell death goes wrong, it can drive the development of cancer and prevent treatments from working effectively. By understanding these processes at a molecular level, we’re helping to develop new therapies to better target cancer cells.”

But this March, these labs are taking their dedication beyond the bench. By taking part in the World’s Greatest Shave, they raising funds to help people facing blood cancer today – and support future research that will improve outcomes for everyone impacted by cancer.
